Applications are invited for one post-doctoral position in extragalactic astronomy to work at the Laboratoire d’Astrophysique de Marseille. The appointment is for three years and is funded by the French National Research Agency (ANR) within the project "investigating MAssive Galaxy Emergence & Early Evolution".
Our project aims to study the rise of massive galaxies from the primordial Universe to z~2. This project combines a unique JWST dataset with state-of-the art hydro-dynamical simulations and machine learning techniques. The successful applicant is expected to work on the observational side of the project and use JWST data to gain new insights on the physics governing both the mass assembly and morphological transformations of massive galaxies in the early Universe.
The successful applicant will be based at LAM and will work closely with Drs Olivier Ilbert and Clotilde Laigle, as well as other members of the ANR project and COSMOS-Web teams. Our team is involved in several JWST projects (COSMOS-Web, PRIMER and GTO-MIRI) as well as in cosmological and galaxy evolution surveys (Euclid, PFS-SuMIRe, LSST), with possible collaborations. The applicant will have access to two high-performance computer clusters as well as significant travel funding.
Applicants with previous experience in extragalactic observational astronomy and the high redshift Universe will be favored. The appointment is up to three years and is funded by the French National Research Agency (ANR) within the project "investigating MAssive Galaxy Emergence & Early Evolution". Our collaboration includes several doctoral students, postdocs and permanent researchers at IAP and LAM. IAP and LAM are amongst the largest French centers for extragalactic astrophysics with a variety of lively interconnected research groups on galaxy evolution, large-scale structure and advanced statistical methods.
iMAGE aims to study the rise of massive galaxies from the primordial Universe to z~2. This project combines a unique JWST dataset with state-of-the art hydrodynamical simulations and machine learning techniques to understand the origins of massive galaxies. The successful applicant will develop a suite of zoom-in cosmological simulations and compare them to JWST observations -- in particular COSMOS-Web -- to understand which physical processes drive the extreme phases of early mass assembly. The successful applicant will work at IAP in close collaboration with Clotilde Laigle (Paris). Olivier Ilbert (Marseille), Yohan Dubois (Paris), Maxime Trebitsch (Groningen) and the other members of the project. The applicant will have access to two high-performance computer clusters and French HPC time as well as significant travel funding.
